| THE LEY LINES OF LONDON Tracing the City’s Ancient Alignments and Unseen Energies At Swedenborg House with Robert Stephenson on Sunday 7th June 2026 at 4:30 pm Does the geometry of the City of London’s churches and the placement of monuments suggest a deliberate, ancient design? Historian and ley hunter Robert Stephenson investigates the "spirit of place" in the city and theories of how London’s urban sprawl might actually be built upon a foundation of prehistoric power. In 1921, the antiquarian and inventor Alfred Watkins experienced a flash of insight while looking at a map of the Herefordshire landscape. He perceived what he believed was a vast, prehistoric network of ‘old straight tracks; connecting ancient sites. Watkins dubbed these "Leys," theorising that they were originally practical trade routes used by ancient Britons to navigate a densely forested wilderness. As the decades passed, Watkins’ utilitarian vision took on a more supernatural glow. By the mid-20th century, these old straight tracks were reimagined not just as paths for travel but as conduits for earth energies—mystical currents flowing beneath the land. In this talk, Robert explains how Watkins’ straight alignments magically morphed into mystic ley lines and the crucial role in this development played by the capital city. A City of London Guide, he has spent over twenty years lecturing on the capital’s history, burial practices and rituals of death. His deep knowledge of London’s landscape, its layers, alignments and overlooked spaces, makes him a compelling guide to the city’s hidden geometries and the enduring fascination of ley lines. | ![]() |
