Following the 9/11 attacks in the USA, 25 years ago, emergency services and mortuary provision in New York was overwhelmed. In London, a emergency planning ‘Resilience Team’ was established to plan for any major disaster in the capital.

The speaker, Kevin Gordon, a former British Transport Police officer, became the project manager for the London Mass Fatality Plan.

In this talk Kevin explains how the plan was created and how it was invoked following the Asian Tsunami of 2004 and the London Bombings of July 2005. The illustrated talk explains the various aspects of temporary mortuary provision including storage of the deceased, viewing area and family assistant centre.

Kevin Gordon is a retired British Transport Police officer who was seconded to the Government’s London Resilience Team in 2003 to lead the Mass Fatalities Project. As co-author of the London Mass Fatality Plan, he played a pivotal role in preparing the capital’s response to major incidents and helped coordinate the mortuary operations following both the 2004 Asian Tsunami and the London bombings of 7 July 2005.
