M. R. James ghost stories by candlelight with Nunkie Theatre
At Kensal Green Cemetery on Sunday the 2nd October 2022 - 7:00 pm

Over a century after they were first published,  London Month of the Dead invites you to hear these classic ghost stories as you've never heard them before - in a graveyard in the month of October. As dusk falls in the cemetery the gatekeeper will guide you on a torchlit procession, picking your way through the tombstones until you reach the chapel where you will discover how the ghost stories of M R James still retain their power to terrify and amuse.

Montague Rhodes James is best known today as a writer of tales of the supernatural, but he was also a distinguished medieval scholar and was Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge university and later Provost of Eton college. Both these stories feature a classic James scenario in which a slightly fusty gentlemen academic comes into contact with an old object which turns out to be possessed of otherworldly powers. Supernatural forces in James’ works were never benevolent but invariably sinister and deadly.

This gripping one man show performed by Robert Lloyd Parry retells two of his eeriest stories. Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad is a tale of nocturnal horror on the Suffolk coast considered by many to be James’s masterpiece. It is beautifully complemented here by The Ash Tree, a story of witchcraft and vengeance down the generations.
